  then and now 40 years later

  i want to put "pen to paper" so to speak, comparing what i left behind as a young jw man 40 years ago, with what ive been reading on this site.. i cant include everything in 1 post, so please put up with me while i compile my recollections.. this is not a hate-filled diatribe, but hopefully a worthwhile comparison.

  i grew up as a jw, being baptised at 14, left school at 15, started pioneering at 17.. the congregation i spent 5 years in, 1966-71, brings back many fond memories, the most important being the love we all shared for each other.. the emphasis was on helping one another; circuit servant visits were eagerly looked forward to, assemblies a treat.. very occasionally, someone might slip up & sin.

  usually it involved sex, most times the person was put on probation ( ever heard that word?).

  I have been around for a minute too and out for hours...LOL

  It has gotten more and more hateful over the years and more paranoid for sure. I feel so much emotion for the current and recent ones, due to all the changes. It was bad before, it is a GD nightmare now....sad...

  Thanks for an honest answer and opinion. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. I do kinda think that at some point, an enlightened elder could use his experience to make subtle hints to the congo when they feel brave and ready.

  I would also like to add this generally...I have repeadedly stated on this thread that the I seek explaination and dialogue from elders or former elders. I have been honest and open with my questions and concerns. I went a little over by giving a glimpse of my personal life to let folks know that I am not a trouble maker or troll on the board, and have had been insulted and attacked. Yes, I am a big girl and what not, but the point is this....only elders have attacked me and treated me with disrespect on this thread with the exception of Blues. Thanks again bro, for actually responding to my questions and fears. I appreciate it.

  Alright, I don't get it, but oh well...as I said, my questions are not about "regulars". but specifically elders and on up. Part of my hang up is that I knew "conscious" elders who swayed always to the majority. If they wouldn't defend themselves, how the heck could they defend anyone else.

  I can't get an answer to that, so I will wait and listen....its really not that big of deal, just something I am curious about.

  My definition of courage is this....To be scared to death, and do the right thing anyway. In this situation, the right thing is to consider the greater good of others. An elder has the "edge" over the rank and file. Don't argue that, you know it is true...Given, an elder is low on the totem pole relatively speaking, but to the congo, he is the direct step to mama. You have to deal with the elder before you can appeal or take a situation further.

  It is a hierarchy, and a male dominated level of authority. Yet some elders would profess to be "protecting" their wife and children. How are you protecting your precious family by subjegating them to a flawed (by your own admission) dogma? How are you protecting them? It seems to me You do not know the first thing about being a woman, or a lowly rank and file member of the witnesses. I don't accept that there is no difference. You are giving allegiance(gulp) to the enemy, and thereby delaying freedom to yourself and to your wife and family, who are indoctrinated to accept your authority... Sorry, I don't accept that, I don't understand that, it hurts me too much.

  Now please remember (lest I get another slobbery raspberry, this is NOT directed to ANYONE personally. It is just my opinion on the wider theme.

  I am a grandma of many children, a long time poster on this board, and am seeking honest dialogue. It is NOT my intent or desire to attack or hurt anyone. I have an honest desire to understand, and am trying to understand. I will drop the matter if my questions are offensive.
